Chi-Yu is an incredibly strong special attacker, and because of its ability Beads of Ruin, it's able to support other special attacking teammates while still dealing a lot of damage. It matches up well against some common restricted Pokemon such as both Calyrex formes and Zamazenta-C and it can also pressure common Pokemon such as Rillaboom, Gholdengo, and Amoonguss with its STAB moves. Snarl keeps special attacking threats such as Calyrex-S and Terapagos in check and still does respectable spread damage, while Dark Pulse provides strong and consistent damage. Overheat is an instant burst of damage that allows Chi-Yu to OHKO even bulky threats like Rillaboom and Zamazenta-C while also getting around Wide Guard. Since it is very frail, Focus Sash helps Chi-Yu survive for longer, whereas Life Orb gives it a significant damage boost, allowing it to OHKO Flutter Mane with Overheat and 2HKO Miraidon with Dark Pulse. Tera Ghost allows it to avoid Fake Out and gain an immunity to otherwise threatening Fighting-type attacks from Koraidon and the Urshifu formes. Chi-Yu pairs well with strong special attackers such as Flutter Mane and Terapagos, since both of them benefit a lot from Beads of Ruin. Chi-Yu struggles with its average Speed stat and appreciates speed control from Tornadus, since it allows Chi-Yu to outspeed threats such as Koraidon, Miraidon, Flutter Mane, and Calyrex-S and deal respectable amount of damage with Beads of Ruin-boosted Bleakwind Storm. Chi-Yu also has problems with Urshifu-R, since it can switch-in on both Heat Wave and Dark Pulse and OHKO Chi-Yu back with Surging Strikes. Amoonguss helps with that issue, by redirecting away Fighting- and Water-type attacks from Urshifu-R, letting Chi-Yu deal damage more consistently. Pelipper is a strong Chi-Yu answer, since it sets up rain and is able to protect teammates from Chi-Yu's attacks with Wide Guard. Incineroar and Assault Vest Raging Bolt can take hits from it easily, meaning that the former can pivot out with Parting Shot and the latter is able to use Snarl, do high damage to it, or take advantage of Beads of Ruin and attack its partner.

Snarl is used as utility and a way to check special attacking compositions such as Farigiraf + Ursaluna-B. Overheat is appreciated as a single target nuke, hitting almost twice as hard as Heat Wave. Choice Specs is used to give Chi-Yu maximum offensive pressure and allow it to pick up OHKOes on Amoonguss and Kingambit with Heat Wave. Alternatively, Chi-Yu can opt for Choice Scarf to outspeed threats like Landorus, Chien-Pao, and Flutter Mane. The HP EVs allow for Chi-Yu to avoid the 2HKO from Flutter Mane's Moonblast and once Terastallized into the Ghost-type, almost always survive -1 Adamant Chien-Pao's Sucker Punch. The Speed EVs allow Chi-Yu to outspeed the Adamant Urshifu formes. Chi-Yu prefers Tera Ghost to remove its Fighting weakness and be immune to common priority moves like Fake Out and Extreme Speed, which is crucial to preserve momentum. Although Chi-Yu can utilize Tera Fire to significantly increase its damage output, allowing Choice Scarf Chi-Yu to OHKO Ogerpon-W and Flutter Mane with Overheat and Choice Specs variants to remove Assault Vest Kingambit and Rillaboom with Heat Wave.

Chi-Yu's excellent damage output, Beads of Ruin support, and great tools in Snarl and Taunt allow it to be especially strong against Amoonguss, Terapagos, and the Calyrex formes and grant Chi-Yu a unique niche as a supportive Pokemon in Regulation G. Snarl is preferred to weaken threats such as Terapagos, Calyrex-S, Raging Bolt, and opposing Chi-Yu; however, Chi-Yu can opt instead for Dark Pulse for a more consistent STAB option against Farigiraf and Pelipper. Overheat is used for burst damage, enabling Chi-Yu to OHKO Calyrex-I and Assault Vest Rillaboom. Taunt is an excellent way for Chi-Yu to shut down Amoonguss as well as Trick Room from setters like Farigiraf and Calyrex-I. This is further enhanced by Covert Cloak's Fake Out immunity, and Covert Cloak also provides Chi-Yu with a valuable immunity to Snarl and Icy Wind stat drops. The EV spread allows Chi-Yu to survive Discharge from Choice Specs Miraidon, Earth Power from Choice Specs Terapagos, and after Terastallization, Close Combat from Urshifu-R. The Special Attack EVs with a Modest nature ensure an OHKO on Zamazenta-C with Overheat, and the Speed EVs enable Chi-Yu to outspeed Terapagos and Adamant Urshifu formes. Tera Water provides a resistance to Urshifu-R's Surging Strikes and Pelipper's Weather Ball while improving Chi-Yu's matchup against Calyrex-I. Because Chi-Yu has relatively poor bulk and a mediocre Speed tier, it struggles with fast, powerful threats such as Miraidon, Choice Scarf Urshifu-R, Koraidon, and Chien-Pao. This makes Rillaboom an exceptional partner, as it can mitigate Miraidon's damage output and threaten Urshifu-R with Wood Hammer and priority Grassy Glide. Rillaboom also appreciates not only Chi-Yu's ability to threaten Steel- and Grass-types like Gholdengo and opposing Rillaboom but also its Taunt shutting down Will-O-Wisp and Parting Shot from Incineroar. Clefairy is also a good partner, enhancing Chi-Yu's bulk and redirecting away attacks to allow Chi-Yu to survive extra crucial turns against Urshifu-R and Chien-Pao. Calyrex-S is a great restricted partner, outspeeding and threatening Miraidon, Koraidon, and Chien-Pao, while also taking advantage of Beads of Ruin. Clefairy and Calyrex-S both appreciate how well Chi-Yu handles Amoonguss and Terapagos. Exceptionally bulky attackers like Kyogre and especially Assault Vest Iron Hands can exploit Chi-Yu's frail defenses, so the above mentioned Rillaboom can be a great help to threaten it and Iron Hands for major damage.

Chi-Yu is a phenomenal glass cannon; it has a strong offensive typing and good Special Attack, aided by its ability. These qualities along with proper speed control allow it to pressure common metagame Pokemon including both Calyrex formes, Rillaboom, Amoonguss, and Zamazenta-C. Snarl threatens a common Restricted core that revolves around redirection—Calyrex and Clefairy—and it can be used to chip away and weaken the damage output of bulkier specially offensive threats like Raging Bolt and Terapagos. Choice Specs allows Chi-Yu to pick up OHKOs on Pokemon like Assault Vest Rillaboom and Calyrex-I with Heat Wave and bulky Pelipper with Dark Pulse. Choice Scarf enables Chi-Yu to outspeed common fast metagame staples such as Chien-Pao, Calyrex-S, and Flutter Mane without Protosynthesis Speed activated. The defensive investment guarantees that Chi-Yu survives Surging Strikes and Tera Water Aqua Jet from Urshifu-R when Chi-Yu has used Tera Ghost, High Horsepower from most Assault Vest Rillaboom, and Tera Starstorm from Terapagos-S at +2. The Speed EVs allow Chi-Yu to outspeed maximum Speed Adamant Urshifu formes, and it also outspeeds Caylrex-S if running Choice Scarf. Special Attack EVs allow Choice Scarf Chi-Yu to threaten an OHKO on Ogerpon-H with Overheat. Tera Ghost is absolutely necessary for Chi-Yu because it can avoid Fake Out and Fighting-type moves like Body Press from Zamazenta-C. Incineroar completely walls Chi-Yu and is able to pivot in and out with Parting Shot, while Urshifu-R is able to simply tank a hit and OHKO Chi-Yu. Kyogre and Pelipper are also definite Chi-Yu answers, as they weaken its Fire-type moves with Drizzle and can retaliate with an OHKO with Water Spout or Origin Pulse and Weather Ball, respectively. Chi-Yu has a plethora of great partners; Choice Specs Terapagos and Miraidon both take great advantage of the power boost provided by Beads of Ruin and are able to pressure Pokemon like Kyogre and Incineroar. Koraidon is another good partner for it because it sets up the sun, overriding rain from Pelipper and Kyogre and boosting Chi-Yu's Fire-type attacks. This also mitigates its weakness to Water-type moves, aiding in Chi-Yu's matchup against the aforementioned threats. Chi-Yu can also function by itself with speed control from Prankster Tailwind setters like Whimsicott and Tornadus, which can also set up the sun.

Set Details Choice Scarf Chi-Yu functions as a fast and powerful attacker that can threaten many common Restricted Pokemon with heavy damage, including both Calyrex formes, Zamazenta-C, and Lunala, while bolstering its teammates' special damage output with Beads of Ruin. Although Snarl is Chi-Yu's weakest move, it allows it to chip foes while shutting down many Restricted Pokemon offensively, including Miraidon and Lunala, and breaking Focus Sash, which is notably used by Flutter Mane. Choice Scarf allows Chi-Yu to outspeed the majority of the format, notably including Calyrex-S and Choice Scarf Urshifu-R. Tera Ghost allows Chi-Yu to avoid Fake Out and alleviate some of Chi-Yu's weaknesses; it particularly provides an immunity to Fighting-type attacks from Zamazenta-C and Iron Hands. Tera Fire can be used as an alternative on teams with priority-blocking measures such as Indeedee-F and Farigiraf to bolster the damage of Heat Wave and Overheat, including guaranteeing an OHKO against Brute Bonnet and Zacian-C with Heat Wave and against Flutter Mane with Overheat. Teambuilding Common metagame threats such as Incineroar, Urshifu-R, and Koraidon can resist its STAB moves and, in the case of the latter two, threaten to OHKO Chi-Yu. Raging Bolt and Iron Hands, due to their bulk and power, can also pressure Chi-Yu. Without Tera Ghost, Chi-Yu is vulnerable to Fake Out from the likes of Rillaboom and Incineroar. Opposing speed control, in the form of Tailwind and Trick Room, can cause many threats like Urshifu-R, Ogerpon-C, and Ursaluna to outspeed Chi-Yu and take advantage of its weak defenses. Additionally, Wide Guard users like Zamazenta-C and Lunala can take advantage of Chi-Yu locked into Snarl or Heat Wave. Due to its lack of bulk, priority moves can threaten Chi-Yu severely, namely Aqua Jet from Urshifu-R, Sucker Punch from Chien-Pao after Terastallizing, and Thunderclap from Raging Bolt. Strong partners for Chi-Yu include powerful special attackers, such as Calyrex-S and Miraidon, which can take advantage of its Beads of Ruin while threatening Urshifu-R and Koraidon. Koraidon also pairs very well with Chi-Yu, as not only do they form a powerful core offensively, with Chi-Yu threatening Lunala and Calyrex-S and Koraidon threatening Incineroar and Urshifu-R, but Koraidon also provides sun to bolster Chi-Yu's Fire-type attacks. Flutter Mane is another common partner for Chi-Yu, as it benefits from Beads of Ruin to bolster its damage output, while Flutter Mane can run Taunt to deny Wide Guard and Trick Room. Chi-Yu also appreciates redirection support to alleviate its frailty, commonly from Brute Bonnet and Indeedee-F, which can also provide support with Spore and Psychic Terrain, respectively.

Heat Wave allows Chi-Yu to pick off Pokemon like Choice Scarf Gholdengo and Chien-Pao, as well as being a good method of spreading damage. Dark Pulse can hit Ghost- and Psychic-types like Dragapult and Armarouge, as well as Pokemon that resist Fire-type moves, like Glimmora. Flamethrower and Overheat both give Chi-Yu the ability to focus its damage on a singular Pokemon, with Overheat being significantly stronger but far more punishing than Flamethrower. Heat Wave provides excellent spread damage severely threatening Steel- and Grass-types like Gholdengo and Amoonguss while still being able to scorch neutral targets. Snarl provides a secondary spread attack that can hit deceptively hard, in addition to debuffing the opposing team, while Tera Blast can be utilized with Tera Grass in order to give Chi-Yu an option to hit Pokemon like Palafin and Iron Bundle. Protect should only be used with Life Orb, but can keep Chi-Yu safe for a turn while a teammate either repositions or sets speed control to assist it. Choice Specs and Life Orb both boost Chi-Yu's damage output to absurd levels, with the former allowing Chi-Yu to switch moves in exchange for the recoil and loss of power. Tera Fire exponentially increases the strength of Fire-type moves for Chi-Yu, while Tera Grass patches up Chi-Yu's weakness to Water-type moves, and Tera Ghost prevents Fake Out and Extreme Speed from slowing down or picking off Chi-Yu, in addition to turning the Fighting-type weakness to an immunity.

Chi-Yu's solid offensive stats combined with Beads of Ruin make it a powerful wallbreaker in the tier, with its unresisted STAB combination threatening out key Pokemon such as Necrozma-DM, Zacian-C, and Lunala. However, Chi-Yu's mediocre Speed tier means it is easily revenge killed by Pokemon like Marshadow and Palkia-O, especially since it is quite frail, meaning it needs team support to position itself safely, so Sticky Web structures are needed for it to thrive. Fire Blast allows Chi-Yu to OHKO offensive Necrozma-DM and 2HKO Dragon Dance Arceus-Ground unboosted while also OHKOing Extreme Killer Arceus after a Nasty Plot boost. Flamethrower has less power but improved accuracy. Black Hole Eclipse enables Chi-Yu to OHKO Double Dance Primal Groudon, Palkia-O, and Mega Salamence unboosted while also allowing Chi-Yu to OHKO Ho-Oh, defensive Primal Kyogre, Zacian-C, and defensive Eternatus after a boost, greatly benefitting it in wallbreaking opposing balance teams. Taunt allows Chi-Yu to stop status conditions such as Toxic poison and paralysis from Pokemon such as Ho-Oh and Giratina-O, letting it wallbreak more comfortably. Overheat lets Chi-Yu break through Chansey after hitting it with boosted Black Hole Eclipse, as well as giving Chi-Yu a greater offensive presence outside of Nasty Plot, letting it OHKO Marshadow and defensive Necrozma-DM after a layer of spikes, although the latter is not guaranteed. Chi-Yu is a very strong attacker, so a lot of the time its presence alone can threaten out Pokemon like Necrozma-DM, enabling either free damage or a Nasty Plot boost. Chi-Yu should be careful with its Z-Move, since it's ideally used to target Pokemon such as Ho-Oh or defensive Eternatus, rather than using it wastefully against Pokemon such as Marshadow or Mega Mewtwo Y. In a situation where Chi-Yu cannot use Nasty Plot reliably, using Black Hole Eclipse unboosted is still quite powerful, as the chip damage alone is enough in some situations where a teammate can clean up walls like Ho-Oh, Eternatus, and support Arceus formes. Chi-Yu works best on hyper offense structures that revolve around Sticky Web, meaning setters such as Shuckle and Smeargle are greatly appreciated; the latter also comes with the benefit of removing entry hazards with Mortal Spin for Chi-Yu, since it cannot hold Heavy-Duty Boots, while they both can set additional hazards such as Stealth Rock or Spikes which help Chi-Yu reach important damage thresholds. Teammates that can threaten out specially defensive walls such as Ho-Oh, Eternatus, and Arceus-Fairy are greatly appreciated by Chi-Yu since it can wallbreak easier, so teammates such as offensive Primal Groudon, Necrozma-DM, and Marshadow are good for this; these Pokemon also appreciate Chi-Yu breaking through physical walls like opposing Primal Groudon, Zygarde, and support Arceus formes.

With a Choice item, Chi-Yu can choose to become either a spicy revenge killer or a scorching wallbreaker! Flamethrower versus Lava Plume: Flamethrower's higher power makes it the better cleaning tool, but Lava Plume's higher burn chance gives Chi-Yu a good shot of punishing major physical attacking fores such as Dragonite, Azumarill, and Garchomp that resist Fire. Psychic: This is Chi-Yu's most powerful attack against Urshifu-R and Toxapex and can pick off weakened Annihilape without Overheat's Special Attack drop. Tera Blast: Even before Terastallizing, Tera Blast is a decent coverage move that hits Primarina and Roaring Moon. Modest versus Timid: Modest is generally preferred since Chi-Yu's Speed isn't too impressive, but Timid does ensure that Chi-Yu outspeeds Urshifu formes, Annihilape, and Mimikyu, who are fully capable of revenge killing Chi-Yu that lack Choice Scarf. Other Options Fire Blast: Fire Blast's shaky accuracy can be an issue, but it's a far better sweeping tool than Overheat. Memento: Support isn't Chi-Yu's forte, but Memento lets Choice Scarf sets potentially set-up a sweeper in exchange for KOing itself. Items Choice Scarf: Choice Scarf patches up Chi-Yu's lukewarm Speed into something usable for revenge killing and also makes bulkier builds easier to use. Choice Specs: Choice Specs trades revenge killing for terrifying wallbreaking power. With Tera Fire, the heat gets so extreme that even Blissey is 2HKOed by Overheat! Bulkier EV Spread 228 HP / 12 Def / 124 SpA / 4 SpD / 140 Spe with Modest: This is a bulky spread meant for Choice Scarf, outspeeding up to Iron Bundle. The bulk investment survives Breloom's Mach Punch, Mimikyu's Play Rough followed by Shadow Sneak, and has a good shot of surviving Tera Normal Choice Band Dragonite's Extreme Speed. 40 EVs can be moved from Special Attack to Speed to outspeed Dragapult at a serious cost to power. Tera Types Tera Dependency - Low: Chi-Yu's damage output is red hot even without Terastallization, making it a fairly flexible Pokemon. Fire: Tera Fire Overheat is extremely difficult to wall without a resistance, making it an easy choice for Chi-Yu. It also lets Tera Blast become a powerful STAB move while Chi-Yu is locked into using it, letting it get around the normal limitations of using a Choice item. Grass: Tera Grass is a good response to Urshifu-R and Primarina, and lets Chi-Yu avoid being OHKOed by Iron Bundle's Hydro Pump. Fairy: Tera Fairy is Chi-Yu's best shot of defeating Roaring Moon and and gives it an important Fighting-type resistance. Ghost: Tera Ghost lets Chi-Yu surprise common users of Normal-type priority such as Dragonite, Ogerpon-H, and Entei, with the bonus of blocking Breloom from an easy revenge kill. Dark: While Tera Dark is nowhere near as impressive as a boosted Overheat, Dark Pulse has excellent coverage and also removes Chi-Yu's troublesome Stealth Rock weakness. Water: Getting a Water-type resistance is always useful against Urshifu-R, but the real key for Tera Water is that it helps Chi-Yu in the mirror match-up, especially against Assault Vest Chi-Yu.

Chi-Yu's sizzling offensive power lets it get away with a wide variety of options that wouldn't fit on a Choice item set. Flamethrower versus Lava Plume: Flamethrower's greater power makes it the better option in most instances, but Lava Plume's higher burn rate is good at punishing switch-ins like Roaring Moon and Dragonite. Flame Charge: Chi-Yu is powerful enough that even without an offensive item, getting a Speed boost makes cleaning teams late-game very achievable. Psychic: Psychic is Chi-Yu's best option against Urshifu-R and Toxapex. Note that Overheat will out-damage targets like Annihilape though. Other Options Will-O-Wisp: If not using Assault Vest, Will-O-Wisp severely punishes bulky physical threats like Roaring Moon and Dragonite that may switch in and works great with Terastallization to surprise other bulky threats such Ting-Lu. Items Assault Vest: Chi-Yu has shockingly decent Special Defense, so Assault Vest lets it preform much better against Flutter Mane and opposing Chi-Yu. Life Orb: Life Orb lets you get away with playing this set far more offensively at the cost of being even weaker to priority attacks than usual. Focus Sash: If using a more offensive spread, Focus Sash can be worth it to flip the tables on fast offensive foes such as Iron Bundle. Eject Pack: This turns Overheat into a one-use pivot move, surprising foes with a momentum shift in your favor. EV Spreads 228 HP / 12 Def / 124 SpA / 4 SpD / 140 Spe with Modest: This bulky spread is perfect for Assault Vest and Flame Charge, letting Chi-Yu outspeed Iron Bundle after a boost and avoid an OHKO from Breloom's Mach Punch. It also avoids a KO from Mimikyu's Shadow Sneak following Play Rough and often survives Tera Normal Dragonite's Choice Band Extreme Speed. If outspeeding the rare Dragapult after Flame Charge is a priority, 40 Special Attack EVs can be moved to Speed. 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe with Modest or Timid: When using more offensive items like Life Orb or Focus Sash, going a more offensive route makes Chi-Yu a better late-game sweeper. Modest is preferred for the damage output, but Timid outspeeds Urshifu formes and Annihilape. Tera Types Tera Dependency - Medium: Chi-Yu has a ton of weaknesses to common attacking types, so while Terastallization isn't needed to function, it can especially help bulkier Chi-Yu check more threats and otherwise focus less on hit-and-run attacking. Fire: Beyond giving Overheat soul-melting damage output, Tera Fire gives Chi-Yu a vital Fairy-type resistance against Flutter Mane and a good shot of OHKOing even bulky Flutter Mane with Overheat. Grass: Tera Grass is a huge help against Urshifu-R and Primarina, and can save Chi-Yu from Choice Scarf Landorus-T revenge kills as long as it doesn't use Flying Tera Blast. Fairy: Tera Fairy has good synergy with Chi-Yu's former typing, giving it a vital Fighting-type resistance and ensuring Chi-Yu is not walled by Roaring Moon. Ghost: Tera Ghost is Chi-Yu's best hope against Dragonite and Entei's Extreme Speed, as well as blocking snipes from Ogerpon-H's Quick Attack. Water: Tera Water works great on Assault Vest Chi-Yu with Tera Blast, ironically turning it into a decent check against other Chi-Yu! It also eases the matchup against Urshifu-R.

While not easy to sweep with due to it's Speed, Chi-Yu becomes a a hot wallbreaker after setting up Nasty Plot! Overheat: Overheat's Special Attack drop may conflict with Nasty Plot, but it'll deep-fry almost any Pokemon slower than Chi-Yu, making it a worthy wallbreaking tool. Psychic: Psychic shatters Urshifu-R, a common revenge killer against Chi-Yu. Substitute: Substitute does a great job of punishing common status users such as Archaludon. If Terastallized, Chi-Yu has a good chance of retaining its Substitute against Salt Cure as well. Timid versus Modest: While this Chi-Yu is more focused on extreme wall-frying than sweeping, Timid is nice for outspeeding Urshifu formes and Annihilape, whom certainly can't handle boosted attacks well. Items Focus Sash: Focus Sash makes setting up Nasty Plot much easier, at the cost of power. Life Orb: While it makes Chi-Yu even more vulnerable to priority moves, Life Orb is otherwise an excellent wallbreaking item, notably giving Chi-Yu a better matchup against stall teams. Alternate EV Spreads 24 HP / 12 Def / 220 SpA / 252 Spe with Timid or Modest: If using Substitute, this spread prevents Garganacl with 4 Attack EVs from breaking a Terastallized Chi-Yu's Substitute with Salt Cure. Note that Body Press and Earthquake will still break the Substitute unless using the correct Tera Type. Tera Types Tera Dependency - Medium: Chi-Yu's poor defensive typing can make it fairly easy to revenge kill, so having Terastallization free gives Chi-Yu much more KO opportunities beyond cooking slower threats. Fire: Tera Fire makes Overheat an insane wall-breaking move, with Life Orb threatening to OHKO Blissey after a boost! Ghost: Tera Ghost covers Chi-Yu's Fighting-type weakness and helps against Extreme Speed and Quick Attack, making it much harder to stop its sweep.
