Gourgeist (Large) Movesets & Competitive Sets

Gourgeist-L does have a small niche over its larger cousin in its ability to outspeed Jellicent, Aggron, and Aurorus, among others. Unfortunately, it sacrifices quite a bit of bulk in order to do so, making it much easier to wear down with attacks. As such, you'll want to use Gourgeist-XL for its higher bulk.

Moves Will-O-Wisp can get chip damage on foes, as well as cripple physical attackers bar Fire-types and Guts users. Synthesis offers Gourgeist-L reliable recovery, which can keep it healthy. Seed Bomb hits Water-types such as Simipour and Floatzel, as well as Ground- and Rock-types such as Stunfisk and Golem. Foul Play targets physical attackers that take less damage from Seed Bomb, such as Rapidash and Dodrio. Set Details The given Special Defense EVs allow Gourgeist-L to avoid being OHKOed by Zebstrika's Overheat, while Gourgeist-L's Speed investment allows it to outpace maximum Speed, Adamant nature Golem and Armaldo. The Defense EVs with an Impish nature and Gourgeist-L's large base Defense stat allow it to take physical hits as well as it can. Leftovers gives Gourgeist-L a bit of passive recovery per turn, while Frisk can be used to scout for a foe's item. Usage Tips Gourgeist-L's main priority is spreading burn using Will-O-Wisp, but it should be kept healthy by means of Synthesis. Use Gourgeist-L to spinblock, but be wary of a Knock Off from Armaldo or Fire-type STAB move from Torkoal. Due to Gourgeist-L's massive Defense, it can switch into physical attackers such as Ursaring, Armaldo, and Golem. Be aware of Flash Fire users such as Ninetales and Rapidash, as they can switch into Gourgeist-L's Will-O-Wisp and hit back with a boosted attack. Team Options Gourgeist-L works well with entry hazard setters such as Roselia, Quilladin, and Clefairy, as it can deter the use of Rapid Spin due to its Ghost typing. Pokemon such as Grumpig and Zweilous work well with Gourgeist-L by taking on Fire-types such as Rapidash and Ninetales. Monferno can defeat threaten Dark- and Ice-types for Gourgeist-L. Rock-types such as Probopass and Golem can take advantage of Flying-types, the former setting up Stealth Rock or gaining momentum with Volt Switch and the latter setting up Stealth Rock or hitting them with a Rock-type STAB move. Clerics such as Audino and Grumpig can heal off status from Gourgeist-L and allow it to stay on the field longer and remain healthy.
