Set Details Brave Bird ensures that Cramorant can hit Vaporeon, Breloom, and Tsareena, and it synergizes greatly with Gulp Missile's activation dropping the foe's Defense. On the other hand, Ice Beam further improves Cramorant's matchup against Flying-types like Altaria and Kilowattrel, which otherwise don't mind attacking it. The Special Defense EVs allow Cramorant to avoid the 2HKO from Chandelure's Shadow Ball. Tera Ground lets Cramorant block an incoming Volt Switch or Thunderbolt from Raikou or Kilowattrel and hit back with a Surf to set up Gulp Missile. Tera Electric improves Cramorant's matchup against common Flying-types like Kilowattrel, Scyther, and Tornadus. Toxicroak and Goodra are amazing teammates for Cramorant because of their ability to sweep bulky teams running Vaporeon, which Cramorant cannot touch. Cramorant is also benefitted by the presence of Flygon and Rhyperior, as they are immune to the Electric-type attacks Cramorant cannot handle. Cramorant easily wears down entry hazard-setting Steel-types with Surf as they come in to use Defog, making it a helpful partner for Munkidori, Meloetta, and Tornadus, as they struggle against these foes without support. Cramorant is a useful option for balance teams because it also patches up Water-and Fighting-type weaknesses in defensive cores that use Rhyperior and a Steel-type. Access to Defog makes Cramorant a useful hazard control option for many teams, which benefits Choice Scarf users such as Infernape and bulky Pokemon that prefer to run Leftovers like Klefki and Scrafty.

Despite its poor base stats, Cramorant shines as an entry hazard remover thanks to a unique ability that can provide constant pressure on an opposing team as well as spread status in Gulp Missile, pressuring common entry hazard setters like Mudsdale and Palossand, and a defensive typing that lets it check common foes like Arcanine, Hariyama, and Salazzle. Brave Bird synergizes well with Gulp Missile, taking advantage of its Defense drops and forcing out Pokemon like Florges and Milotic that would otherwise not mind staying in on Cramorant. Hurricane avoids the issue of Brave Bird dealing recoil damage and making contact while also hitting Amoonguss harder, but it is prone to missing due to its low accuracy and doesn't take advantage of Gulp Missile's Defense drops. The given EV spread allows Cramorant to avoid a 2HKO from Choice Band Paldean Tauros-F using Close Combat or Flare Blitz while outspeeding Adamant Golurk, while the rest is put into Special Defense to better check special threats like Tastugiri. Tera Steel is recommended to remove Cramorant's Rock and Electric weaknesses while giving it many relevant resistances to the STAB moves of Pokemon such as Florges and Alolan Ninetales and preventing it from being poisoned by foes like Skuntank and Amoonguss. Cramorant fits best on balance teams that appreciate its ability to remove entry hazards while being able to shore up its poor defenses with multiple defensive partners and support offensive Pokemon by spreading paralysis via Gulp Missile. Its biggest weakness is to Electric-types like Pawmot and Rotom-H, which struggle to come in but consistently force it out, so Grass- and Ground-types like Amoonguss and Rhydon,respectively, are heavily recommended to be able to deal with them. Other Ground-types such as Palossand and Mudsdale can also switch into Rock-type moves such as Stone Edge from Paldean Tauros-F and opposing Rhydon as well as scout the occasional Wild Charge from Arcanine, taking some pressure off of Cramorant. In return, Cramorant can switch into Water-types like Choice item Bruxish locked into Wave Crash and Floatzel, and both Palossand and Mudsdale can help handle Fighting-types such as Hisuian Decidueye and Emboar. Dark-types like Skuntank and Hisuian Qwilfish can also switch into Bruxish's Psychic Fangs with the added benefit of switching into Toxic for Cramorant.

Cramorant finds a niche in ZU as a Defogger, threatening common entry hazard setters such as Rhydon and Piloswine. Roost is necessary to improve Cramorant's longevity and lets it consistently switch into the likes of Accelgor and Poliwrath. Surf activates Gulp Missile, allowing Cramorant to punish attackers, and can potentially paralyze them if Gulp Missile is activated when it has no more than 50% HP. Hurricane complements Surf by targeting foes such as Qwilifish and Tangela. The given spread allows Cramorant to outspeed Modest Exeggutor and avoid the 2HKO from Nasty Plot boosted Ninetales, as well as checking physical attackers like Sawk and Gurdurr. Although Cramorant is an effective Defogger, its 4x weakness to Electric makes it susceptible to Rotom formes. Checks to them such as Rhydon and Piloswine are appreciated; Rhydon can also check Kangaskhan. Knock Off absorbers like Silvally formes and Alolan Persian can improve Cramorant's longevity and let it consistently clear entry hazards by keeping Heavy-Duty Boots intact; in return, the latter values it threatening opposing Ground-types. Cramorant's ability to inflict paralysis with Gulp Missile at low HP complements slow wallbreakers like Exeggutor and Skuntank and aids them against fast attackers like Gourgeist-S and Sawk. Powerful attackers such as Silk Scarf Kangaskhan, Silvally formes, and Sawk appreciate Cramorant's Defog letting them consistently switch into battle.
