Analysis

This set attempts to make Arbok a setup sweeper thanks to Coil, its decent coverage, and setup opportunities that Intimidate and its typing bring. However, due to Arbok's mediocre bulk and defensive typing, it is rather hard to successfully set up. Even when it does, its merely average Attack leaves it easily walled by the likes of Jellicent and Sableye, while its poor Speed and bulk leave it prey to faster Pokemon like Oricorio-E and Choice Scarf Aurorus, making it reliant on Sucker Punch to hit them while leaving it unable to use its STAB move and other coverage options.

Analysis

Moves Coil raises Arbok's Attack, Defense, and accuracy simultaneously. Gunk Shot benefits from Coil, as the accuracy boost negates its chance to miss. Earthquake hits Steel-types such as Klinklang, Pawniard, and Mawile that are immune to Arbok's STAB moves as well as Poison-types such as Garbodor. However, Seed Bomb allows Arbok to punch holes in bulky Ground-types such as Rhydon, Piloswine, and Quagsire while also hitting Carracosta hard. Sucker Punch bypasses Arbok's middling Speed and hits faster threats such as Archeops and Tauros hard after a boost. Aqua Tail allows Arbok to hit Rhydon slightly harder than Seed Bomb, with a +1 Adamant Life Orb Aqua Tail guaranteeing the OHKO on offensive Rhydon and having an over 50% chance of OHKOing bulky Rhydon after Stealth Rock damage. It also allows Arbok to hit Steel-types neutrally, but it misses out on hitting Quagsire and Carracosta super effectively. Set Details Maximum Attack and Speed EVs allow Arbok to hit as hard and as fast as possible. An Adamant nature gives Arbok a significant boost in power, while a Jolly nature allows Arbok to outspeed other neutral-natured base 80 Speed Pokemon such as Mesprit and Shiftry. Life Orb gives Arbok's attacks more initial power; however, Lum Berry gives Arbok protection against status ailments while setting up. Intimidate gives Arbok more setup opportunities against offensive teams by softening physical hits, while Shed Skin lets it set up against defensive teams by giving it a chance to get rid of status conditions. Usage Tips Try to set up mid- or late-game, as Arbok doesn't really have the power to break through early-game and is better used when the opposing team is weakened. Arbok should set up on walls such as Mega Audino, which cannot break past Arbok thanks to its resistance to Dazzling Gleam. Arbok can also set up on Vileplume and Roselia lacking Sleep Powder thanks to its resistance to both of their STAB moves. Arbok can set up on Cradily, a plethora of opposing Poison-types such as Garbodor and Skuntank, and non-Choiced Fighting-types such as Hariyama, Hitmonchan, and Gurdurr. However, Arbok must scout for moves on said Fighting-types, as the former two might be running Earthquake, while Gurdurr can severely hinder Arbok's sweeping capabilities should it have Knock Off. Do not switch Arbok in at all early-game because it has no recovery and taking damage early-game limits Arbok's sweeping capabilities. Team Options Dark-types such as Skuntank, Shiftry, Malamar, and Liepard can get rid of Psychic-types such as Musharna and Mesprit. Skuntank and Liepard can also Pursuit trap foes, whittling down the opposing team so that Arbok can sweep; however, Skuntank stacks a Ground weakness with Arbok. Fire-types such as Magmortar and Pyroar can absorb Will-O-Wisp and deal with Ghost-types as well as Weezing. Spikes support from Pokemon such as Ferroseed and Cacturne can help wear down Steel-types such as Klinklang that are immune to Arbok's STAB moves. One layer of Spikes also guarantees an OHKO with Aqua Tail on bulky Rhydon. Healing Wish support from Mesprit or Lilligant can give Arbok a second chance at sweeping if it has been weakened throughout the match. Defensive Grass-types such as Vileplume, Torterra, and Ferroseed can help wear down the bulky Ground-types that Arbok has trouble with. Note that having support from Grass-types is much more important if Earthquake is used, as Seed Bomb and Aqua Tail already provide coverage versus Ground-types.

Moves Coil boosts Arbok's Attack, Defense, and accuracy, allowing it to pick up extra KOs, take hits more comfortably, and giving Gunk Shot a 100% hit rate at +1. Gunk Shot can deal a lot of damage to even neutral foes such as Stoutland and Monferno. Earthquake hits Rock-, Ground-, and Steel-types such as Golem, Stunfisk, and Pawniard. Sucker Punch allows Arbok to pick off weakened foes and frailer Pokemon such as Kadabra and Zebstrika while also dealing a lot of damage to fast and frail Pokemon at +1. Set Details A fully offensive EV spread with an Adamant nature allows Arbok to hit as hard as possible while outspeeding Pokemon such as Pawniard and slower variants of Grumpig. Intimidate allows Arbok to switch into or set up on physical attackers such as Simisage, while Black Sludge gives Arbok passive recovery, allowing it to switch into these Pokemon multiple times. Alternatively, Shuca Berry allows Arbok to take Ground-type moves much more effectively, allowing it to lure and possibly beat Golem and Stunfisk. A Jolly nature can be used to outspeed Adamant Monferno and Timid Grumpig, though Arbok loses a lot of power and misses out on some KOs, namely the 2HKO on Stunfisk at +1; however, to combat the loss in power, Arbok can make use of Life Orb, though this detracts from Arbok's longevity. Usage Tips Arbok should mainly be used as a wallbreaker, making it easier for its teammates to sweep late-game. Arbok can also use Coil to sweep late-game itself, picking off weakened foes with Sucker Punch. Arbok can switch into and should set up on Pokemon that can't deal much damage to it such as Roselia. Arbok can lure the likes of Golem and Stunfisk into thinking they can KO it, but Arbok can survive a hit thanks to Shuca Berry and KO them in return. Do not switch Arbok into Pokemon with Defiant such as Pawniard and Purugly, as they will gain an Attack boost. Team Options Grass-types such as Tangela and Quilladin make for good partners for Arbok, as they can take on the Ground-types that plague it such as Golem and Stunfisk. Arbok also appreciates Pokemon such as Metang that can take on Psychic-types such as Grumpig and Mr. Mime. Wallbreakers such as Stoutland and Floatzel are able to weaken a lot of Arbok's checks, making it easier for Arbok to sweep; additionally, Stoutland is able to trap Misdreavus with Pursuit. Pokemon such as Monferno and Dodrio that struggle with Stunfisk appreciate Arbok's ability to lure it in and deal with it thanks to Shuca Berry. Because Arbok is somewhat slow, Leavanny can be a great partner, providing Sticky Web to slow down faster foes such as Floatzel.

Analysis

With access to Coil, a move that boosts Attack, Defense, and accuracy, as well as a high-powered STAB move, Arbok can become very threatening after a single boost. Arbok utilizes its good defensive typing and Coil to set up against a variety of offensive and defensive Pokemon, boosting its Attack while simultaneously making it harder to revenge kill. Gunk Shot is the main STAB move, and it works very well in conjunction with Coil, which brings its shaky 70% accuracy up to 91% after just one boost. Sucker Punch gives Arbok a way of defeating the faster Pokemon that try to revenge kill it. In the last slot, Earthquake can be used for coverage against Steel- and Rock-types, but Seed Bomb can be used instead in order to hit Ground-type Pokemon for super effective damage without losing coverage against Rock-types. Both of Arbok's abilities are good, and the one you use should depend upon the role you'd like Arbok to play. Intimidate is the preferred ability if you want Arbok to succeed against offensive teams, as it allows Arbok to come in against most Fighting-type Pokemon, including as Primeape, Gurdurr, and Sawk that are locked into Close Combat, and use them as to set up. Shed Skin, however, can be used to let Arbok function more as a stallbreaker, letting it set up multiple times against a variety of bulkier Pokemon thanks to how well it can shrug off a burn or paralysis. Aside from the moves listed above, Rest can be used in conjunction with Shed Skin, allowing Arbok to heal up and hopefully wake up early. However, it would force Arbok to choose between coverage and priority, meaning it would have a harder time against either defensive or offensive teams. Aqua Tail is a usable move in the fourth slot to hit Ground-types while still retaining coverage on Steel-types, but it doesn't hit Steel-types hard enough and would lose out on coverage against Seismitoad. While this set is fairly powerful, it struggles against bulky Ghost- and Psychic-type Pokemon. Liepard makes for an exceptional teammate, as it is able to Pursuit trap these Pokemon and can even Encore setup sweepers such as Calm Mind Musharna that would normally set up against Arbok. Arbok returns the favor by defeating the Fighting-types that plague Liepard. If Seed Bomb is used, Steel-type Pokemon such as Metang, Klang, and Bastiodon will be problematic—Klang can even set up alongside it. Therefore, Pokemon that can get rid of them, such as Golurk and Seismitoad, make for good partners. However, if Earthquake is chosen, Ground-types such as Piloswine and Golurk become an issue, making bulky Water-types, such as Ludicolo and Seismitoad, good partners to defeat them.

Coil's increases to Attack and accuracy synergizes well with Gunk Shot, which becomes a powerful, accurate STAB attack and with a high poison chance. Earthquake is a good coverage move for Gunk Shot, as it hits common switch-ins like Klang and Stunfisk for heavy damage. The last move is recommended to be Sucker Punch to give Arbok a priority option, but Fire Fang is useful for hitting certain threats like Bronzor. Both abilities help with consistency; Intimidate gives Arbok more opportunities to set up, while Shed Skin lets it shake off status that could cripple it otherwise such as paralysis from Stunfisk and Vileplume. Intimidate is recommended due to its more versatile utility and potential to make Arbok a useful switch-in to threats like Monferno and Simisage. Leftovers is the preferred item to make Arbok harder to KO, let it bank more on Coil's Defense boost, and make switching into the aforementioned threats slightly easier, but the power advantage of Life Orb is high enough that it allows Arbok to hit as if it had an additional Coil already set up. Shuca Berry can be used to mitigate Arbok's Ground weakness, allowing it to live attacks from threats like Stunfisk and Torterra and potentially beat or set up against them. Coil Arbok finds itself on balance and bulky offense teams that want a blanket check to some threats like Monferno that can also threaten walls like Vileplume. As such, Arbok makes for a good teammate to Pokemon that appreciate having those threats taken care of such as Shiftry, Marowak, and Zebstrika. Arbok also appreciates partners that cover its Psychic- and Ground-type weakness such as Scraggy or Torterra. Arbok also really enjoys the entry hazards set by Pokemon such as Rampardos, Torterra, and Dwebble. Arbok's Speed is just shy of the base 81 Speed benchmark, making it into a slightly slower offensive Pokemon, so Pokemon like Stunfisk and Clefairy that can spread paralysis are appreciated for their ability to slow the opposing team down for a potential Arbok sweep later.

Poison Jab is the preferred STAB option due to its 100% accuracy, but Gunk Shot is significantly stronger at the cost of accuracy. Earthquake rounds out coverage by letting Arbok hit Steel-types like Klang as well as hitting a potential counter in Stunfisk. Switcheroo gives Arbok's Choice Scarf to common walls that usually beat it like Bronzor, crippling them. The last slot goes largely unused, but there are a few options that are worthwhile after Switcheroo is used: Fire Fang allows Arbok to damage Bronzor after giving it the Choice Scarf, Coil lets Arbok set up, and Sucker Punch can be used to continue revenge killing even after the Choice Scarf is lost. Shed Skin is the preferred ability to have a chance to shake off any unfortunate burns or paralysis that would cripple Arbok otherwise. It is very important to note that while Arbok can adequately fulfill the role of revenge killer with a Choice Scarf, it is the slowest common option for a Choice Scarf user by the tier's standards. As such, the decision to choose Choice Scarf Arbok hinges more on its ability to cripple walls with Switcheroo than anything else. Because of this, teammates like Torterra, Beheeyem, and Monferno that love having Arbok's common checks and counters like Stunfisk and Bronzor crippled are excellent choices for a potential follow-up sweep. Arbok needs a lot of help to fully finish off threats, so entry hazard setters like Dwebble, Stunfisk, and Maractus can be good choices. Pokemon such as Bronzor, Maractus, and Scraggy also make for good partners, as they can take on common Ground- and Psychic-type attacks from Marowak and Beheeyem that are directed at Arbok. Arbok can take Fighting- and Grass-type attacks from threats like Monferno and Simisage for teammates like Scraggy and Stunfisk for some light defensive synergy as well.

Coil makes Arbok a dangerous sweeper, and its accuracy boost makes Arbok's STAB move, Gunk Shot, more reliable. Earthquake primarily targets Steel-types like Lairon and Pawniard, and it has the added benefit of breaking through opposing Arbok, though picking it leaves Arbok struggling against Ground-types and Solrock. Alternatively, Aqua Tail still provides super effective coverage against most Rock- and Ground-types while still doing high damage to Pawniard, though it leaves Arbok unable to break through Whiscash and Frillish before they can KO or cripple it back. Seed Bomb retains super effective damage against Solrock and Ground-types while also threatening Whiscash and Frillish, though now Arbok has no effective way to damage Steel-types, and Frillish can still threaten Arbok if not weakened prior. Sucker Punch lets Arbok pick off faster threats like Persian and Simisear, as well as threatening Choice Scarf Psychic-types like Grumpig and Mr. Mime. Intimidate lets Arbok find more setup opportunities by weakening opposing physical attackers. Arbok best fits on offensive teams looking for an effective wincon that can set up on certain important physical attackers, such as Muk or Mienfoo. Based on its choice of coverage, Solrock, Steel-types, or Ground-types tend to be able to wall it. Water-types such as Staryu and Whiscash serve as effective checks to Solrock and most Pokemon of these types, Grass-types such as Leafeon and Meganium can also handle Solrock and Ground-types, and Mienfoo and Hippopotas can handle Steel-types as well. The aformentioned Grass-types also help against Frillish and Whiscash if Arbok forgoes Seed Bomb. Stealth Rock support from setters such as Solrock and Lairon is essential for getting faster threats like Simisear and Mr. Mime into Sucker Punch range. While much harder to fit on teams, Spikes support from the likes of Pineco or Shelmet also greatly aids Arbok in these matchups, especially with preventing Persian from repeatedly switching in to wear Arbok down with Fake Out. Other offensive threats like Kingler and Raichu can soften up the opposing team to aid Arbok's endgame sweep.

Analysis

Glare is a neat tool for paralyzing common Ground-type switch-ins such as Rhyperior. Where Weezing's Will-O-Wisp would be useless against special attackers, Arbok's Glare cripples both physical and special sweepers alike. Glare also has the added bonus of being able to paralyze anything it hits, regardless of type, though it does come at the cost of a not-so-hot 75% accuracy. Gunk Shot boasts a great Base Power which can deal a considerable amount of damage to almost any Pokemon that doesn't resist it, but has very low accuracy. Poison Jab has risk-free accuracy, although it wields considerably lower Base Power than Gunk Shot, which is vital for a Pokemon of Arbok's caliber. Earthquake has good coverage with Arbok's STAB, hitting Steel- and Rock-types that are immune to or resist Gunk Shot for super effective damage. It also has the added benefit of hitting Fire-types such as Arcanine and Houndoom for a considerable amount of damage. This is followed by an option of Seed Bomb or Crunch. The former is the best way to get some nice damage on Water-types, especially Omastar, Quagsire, Kabutops, and Gastrodon, all of whom are 4x weak to Seed Bomb. Crunch provides better overall coverage, but it hits fewer Pokemon super effectively. However, these few targets, particularly Rotom and Mismagius, take little damage from anything else Arbok can throw at them; so if your team is weak to the aforementioned Pokemon, Crunch might be the superior option. The EV spread allows Arbok to take powerful, resisted hits with some degree of comfort. Combine this with the fact that Intimidate reduces the opponent's Attack by one stage as Arbok switches in, and it makes an excellent physical tank. 252 HP EVs give the cobra all-around bulk, while the remaining EVs are dumped in its Attack stat. One fact that is pretty much overlooked is that Arbok can absorb Toxic Spikes, and thanks to its ability in combination with its high defensive EV investment, it can switch in on all Toxic Spikes users. This can be used to your advantage, as slower sweepers such as Rampardos and Rhyperior can set up and sweep more easily on paralyzed Pokemon. Entry hazards are especially useful if you are running an offensively-inclined team, as the opponent would most likely switch his or her crippled Pokemon as you try to set up or kill them accordingly. Uxie and Mesprit are invaluable teammates as they are immune to Ground-type attacks, which Arbok cannot afford to take, resist Psychic-type attacks, and are able to set up Stealth Rock, amongst other roles such as setting up dual screens. Cloyster's impressive Defense means it can switch into almost any physical attack with ease. In addition to that, it can set up Spikes as well as spin away enemy hazards for Arbok.

Analysis

Choice Band is a great asset for a Pokemon who is as desperate for attacking power as Arbok. Despite the unappealing fact of being locked into a single move, Switcheroo, when used with correct timing, can render an opposing Pokemon virtually useless. Common switch-ins to Arbok include Registeel and Clefable, and handing them a Choice Band can significantly cripple them whilst at the same time allowing fellow members to set up more easily. Choice Band is also a great item to ruin the sweeping chances of stat-up boosters such as Dragon Dance Feraligatr and Rock Polish Rhyperior, and to cause the opponent to have to predict a lot more. The second slot features two solid STAB moves, Gunk Shot and Poison Jab. Gunk Shot has a massive 120 Base Power, although with its shaky 70% accuracy, it can cause an almost certain KO or even win to go astray. However, Arbok can do with the extra 40 Base Power Gunk Shot brings, especially when it has given away its Choice Band; although if you prefer having 100% accuracy, Poison Jab is your better bet. Earthquake has good coverage with Arbok's STAB move, hitting both Rock- and Steel-types for super effective damage. However, Registeel and Regirock are 3HKOed most of the time, and hence Arbok is better off switching out before they can fire off an Earthquake of their own or cripple Arbok with Thunder Wave. The last moveslot depends on what your team can handle better. Seed Bomb can do a number to Pokemon who are 4x weak to Grass-type attacks such as Gastrodon, Rhyperior, and Kabutops, while Crunch is Arbok's only method of hurting Ghost-type Pokemon such as Rotom and Mismagius. 252 Speed EVs and a Jolly nature allows Arbok to tie with other positive base 80 Speed Pokemon such as Venusaur and Blaziken. The remaining EVs are dumped into Attack to give the purple snake as much bite as it can pack. Entry hazards are very useful for a Pokemon such as Arbok as it comes close to landing an OHKO on most Pokemon in the metagame. Uxie is immune to Ground-type attacks and can set up Stealth Rock consistently throughout the match due its sheer bulk, and it can also aid Arbok by crippling the opposing team with Thunder Wave or Yawn. In addition to the above, Uxie usually has little Speed investment so that it can U-turn after the opposing Pokemon attacks it, thereby giving Arbok a safe switch-in. Cloyster and Donphan can switch into most physical attacks aimed at Arbox with ease, and can also set up and spin away entry hazards that threaten to reduce Arbok's longevity. Donphan can also defeat most Steel- and Rock-types that give Arbok constant trouble with its STAB Earthquake.

Set Description Sludge Bomb has overall good neutral coverage, and its chance to poison lets Arbok punish resistant foes like Sableye, Relicanth, and Whiscash. Earthquake targets Rock- and Steel-types like Relicanth, Metang, and Mawile as well as Torkoal and Sableye, while Rock Slide is Arbok's best way to hit Haunter. Sleep Talk makes Arbok a better soft check to offensive Bellossom and lets it absorb Venomoth's Sleep Powder, although Double-Edge is a good alternative if hitting Whiscash harder is desired, and it has good neutral coverage. Maximum Speed with a Jolly nature lets Arbok outspeed Jolly Hitmonchan and Speed tie with Glalie, and maximum Attack investment alongside a Choice Band helps Arbok pressure its switch-ins as much as possible. Intimidate helps Arbok against other leads such as Hitmonchan, Sudowoodo, and Relicanth. There's very little that goes into successfully using Arbok; for the most part, simply focus on predicting switches correctly and using the appropriate coverage move. Arbok's use outside of counterleading certain foes is mostly limited to using its defensive utility to pivot into non-Earthquake Hitmonchan and Sunny Day + Solar Beam users like Bellossom and Tropius to get more wallbreaking opportunities. Something to keep in mind is how low drawback using Sludge Bomb is; only two relevant Pokemon are immune to it, and those that resist it dislike being poisoned. Team Options Diglett is a fantastic partner because it can trap Steel- and Rock-types, which enables Arbok to spam Sludge Bomb more reliably. Since Arbok does a good job of pressuring physical walls like Torkoal, Mawile, and Relicanth, Pokemon such as Swords Dance Tropius and Endure Raticate fit well alongside it. Arbok can struggle to break through Pokemon such as Whiscash and Sableye that it lacks a super effective coverage move for; therefore, pairing it with a Spiker such as Roselia or Cacturne is ideal, giving it better odds to 2HKO them. Additionally, teammates like Wailord and Bellossom are beneficial to deal with Ground-types; Wailord also deals with Metang and Mawile.

Analysis

Poison and Ground is a good attacking combination, and although it happens to be walled by Skarmory, Arbok isn't going to do anything to Skarmory anyway. The last move is up to you. Giga Drain will do about 50% to Rhydon and will replenish some HP, while Substitute could buy you some time to paralyze or poison an opponent. Screech allows you to deal much more damage and force switches, and can work well in conjunction with paralysis.

If Arbok is to be used at all, it should be using this set alongside Thunder Wave Dragonite and Stun Spore Victreebel in the hopes of overwhelming the opponent with Wrap and paralysis. Glare and Wrap are essential, allowing Arbok to paralyze faster threats and use Wrap to wear them down or safely switch out to a teammate. Earthquake 2HKOes Gengar, preventing it from PP stalling Wrap. Hyper Beam finishes off weakened threats. Rock Slide, Double-Edge, and Acid are weaker but lower-risk alternatives to Hyper Beam to hit Pokemon that resist Earthquake.
