Usage Tips Focus on switching Komala in on passive Pokemon it heavily threatens, like Mareanie and Altaria, and begin breaking through the opponent's team. Notably, it is capable on coming in for free on those Pokemon, as well as others like Pyukumuku, thanks to Comatose. Otherwise, use U-turn and Volt Switch from its teammates to switch Komala in. Its bulk isn't great without investment, especially physically, so switching it in on strong attackers is ill-advised. Early-game, it is often useful to utilize Komala's U-turn to generate momentum for its team and wear down its switch-ins. Otherwise, it will be tough to break through the likes of physically defensive Golem without flawless predictions. Knock Off can be used in a similar manner, removing useful items like Leftovers and Eviolite from its checks. Team Options Komala's matchup against offensive teams is far from great, so fast attackers that can threaten the archetype like Floatzel, Rapidash, and Kadabra are very important. Pokemon like Oricorio-F, Silvally formes, and Electivire that can bring in Komala with moves like U-turn and Volt Switch synergize very well with it, especially if they can lure in Pokemon it can threaten. Since Komala forces a lot of switches, hazard setters like Golem, Bronzor, Crustle, and Probopass are important. Probopass also notably traps opposing Steel-types like Bronzor, allowing Komala to spam Return more easily. Komala tends to be forced out by powerful, faster attackers, so having switch-ins for them is crucial; as such, using a good defensive core like Golem + Gourgeist-XL or Altaria + Bronzor can greatly aid Komala.

Set Details An Assault Vest combined with the 160 HP EVs boosts Komala's already good Special Defense, allowing it to easily take special attacks. For example, it does not get OHKOed by Floatzel's All-Out Pummeling from Focus Blast after Stealth Rock and avoids the 2HKO from Choice Scarf Chatot's Boomburst. 96 Speed EVs allow Komala to outspeed offensive Golem, enabling to U-turn out before it can retaliate, thus breaking its Sturdy and generating momentum if the opponent decides to double switch. Usage Tips This set should focus on generating and keeping up momentum and offensive pressure. However, do not be afraid to switch in on special attackers that it can take hits from, such as Chatot and Silvally-Dragon, before removing entry hazards or pivoting out with U-turn. Due to the low Speed investment on this set, Komala's U-turn will usually happen after the foe moves, allowing Komala to bring in strong wallbreakers like Mr. Mime and Pinsir without forcing them to take damage. While Return, Knock Off, and Earthquake won't be the moves you use the most, they are still very strong, and your opponent will have to keep them in mind; look for opportunities to wear down your opponent's team. Remember that Komala is completely immune to every status; do not be afraid to switch into Toxic users that are unable to dent Komala otherwise, such as Bronzor and Mareanie. Team Options Teammates like Gourgeist-XL, Golem, and physically defensive Altaria can cover Komala's lower Defense stat. Gourgeist-XL and Altaria also cover Fighting-types like Silvally-Fighting, while Golem forms a solid hazard control core with it. Since Komala is a slow pivot, frail wallbreakers that appreciate being brought in without taking damage like Chatot, Floatzel, and Pinsir enjoy its support, especially since each of them can beat or set up on Gourgeist-XL and the Rock-types that Komala lures in. Spikes setters like Crustle and Roselia appreciate Komala's Rapid Spin removing entry hazards without undoing their work. Depending on what coverage move is chosen, Pokemon that can deal with the Pokemon Komala loses to are appreciated; Knock Off variants enjoy support from Pokemon like Silvally-Fighting that can threaten Probopass, while Earthquake variants appreciate the likes of Silvally-Dark and Probopass to beat Bronzor.

Toxic is an option over Knock Off if Rapid Spin is chosen in the first slot to punish Pokemon like Colbur Berry Gourgeist-XL, which can spinblock Komala with ease otherwise, and Silvally-Fighting, both of which take little damage from Knock Off and either do not mind having or cannot have their item removed. However, it leaves Komala completely passive once the opposing Pokemon has been badly poisoned and makes it a free switch-in for Pokemon immune to Toxic, like Mareanie, Probopass, Muk, and opposing Komala. Protect allows Komala to be sure to receive its own Wish and helps it scout Choice item users, like Electivire and opposing Komala. Set Details This EV spread makes the most use of Komala's solid natural special bulk to check a variety of special attackers in the tier like Choice Scarf Chatot and Silvally-Dragon. In addition, if Komala is running Bulk Up, it can already boost its Defense, meaning further investment is unnecessary. Usage Tips This Komala set should focus on using its solid special bulk to answer powerful special attackers like Choice Scarf Chatot and Silvally-Dragon. It should be pivoting in and out often, using Wish to keep itself healthy and Knock Off to take on Bronzor and prevent itself from being a free switch-in for attackers that threaten it. If you're running Rapid Spin, switch Komala into entry hazard setters that rely on special attacks or status, like Mareanie and defensive Camerupt, to remove their hazards immediately; thanks to Komala's impressive special bulk and its ability Comatose, it can do so quite freely. If using Bulk Up, Komala should generally be kept healthy until late-game. Although it can still be used to pivot into special attackers, a healthy Komala can set up on many special attackers and passive Pokemon, like Altaria and Zebstrika, and sweep from there. Be careful around mixed attackers or ones that can run either physical or special sets, such as Floatzel and Electivire; while this Komala set can check their special sets, it struggles against their physical ones, so the set should be scouted before switching in. Team Options Due to Komala's lackluster physical bulk, it pairs well with Pokemon that can efficiently cover many attackers that target Defense, like Gourgeist-XL, physically defensive Altaria, Granbull, and physically defensive Golem. The former three also cover Komala's sole weakness in Fighting, while the latter provides Stealth Rock, forming a solid hazard control core. Other checks to Fighting-types like Mareanie and Muk also pair well to take care of Komala's worst type matchup. They also notably cover Silvally-Fighting, which is one of the best switch-ins to Knock Off. Spikes setters like Crustle and Roselia appreciate Komala removing entry hazards from their side of the field without removing the ones they set like a Defogger would.
